SCARBOROUGH Scouts can earn new up-to-date badges which were released by the Scout Association - including ones for public relations and street sports.
Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts and Explorer Scouts can now work towards earning the badges which also include healthy eating and astronautics.
Scarborough district commissioner Bonnie Purchon said: "Forty new badges have been released and they will be available to Scouts in Scarborough.
"The new badges just show how much things have changed. There used to be badges for fishing but that one is no longer available as children are just not doing that any more.
"The PR badge is something completely different and I think it will be interesting for the Scouts."
To gain the badge, which is available for Explorer Scouts aged 14 to 18, they must give a talk to an outside organisation about Scouting and secure media coverage for a Scouting event. They will also need to understand and show use of the Scout brand.
Mrs Purchon thinks the PR badge has been introduced because of the Jamboree last year.
Eight Scouts from Scarborough went to the event and to prepare they had to give presentations to organisations about what they were doing and had to hold various fundraising events.
Mrs Purchon said: "The eight Scouts who went to the Jamboree are now able to achieve the badge because of the work they did.
"Scouts across the country did similar things where they held powerpoint presentations, explaining what they will be doing at the Jamboree and gave a brief history of the Scouting Association."
Scarborough now has around 500 Scouts from Beavers to Explorers. However, they are short of Scout leaders.
Mrs Purchon said: For the last 10 years we have had a shortage of leaders. We are always looking for more and anyone is welcome to join even if they can take it as a job share."
